Warren Bobrow ‘The Cocktail Whisperer’
Mixologist, Author and Cannabis Alchemist, Warren Bobrow shares his views on Cannabis Infused Drinks Market.
Warren Bobrow is a Banker-turned-Chef, Bartender/Mixologist and a world-renowned author. He is better known as “The Cocktail Whisperer”. Warren is a Cannabis Alchemist and is currently involved in the development of cannabis-infused craft drinks. Bobrow also writes for Forbes Website and many magazines and publications. He has published 5 books on mixology such as Apothecary Cocktails, Whiskey Cocktails, Bitters and Shrub Syrup Cocktails, Cannabis Cocktails, The Craft Cocktail Compendium. Warren in an exclusive interview with Cannabis Drinks Expo team shared his views on emerging Cannabis Infused Drinks Market.
"The5x Author, Chef, Barman, Cannabis Alchemist, SXSW-Speaker: 2018! Because of these great experiences, how do you feel? Tell us something about your journey so far?"
I’m 100% self-made from the bottom up many more times than I should ever admit! Actually, I have six books in print, one of them translated into French! I feel like I’m following my dreams and my passion. My professional background is highly diverse. I spoke at SXSW last year, lectured at the Moscow Bar Show (on Rum of all things!) and taught about cannabis in beverages at the Vegas Bar Show. My first book, Apothecary Cocktails was nominated for a Spirited Award at Tales of the Cocktail and my fourth book, Cannabis Cocktails has opened doors to me that I’d never think was possible. For twenty years I worked as an executive assistant at a private bank. No place for a creative mind like mine!
Based on your vivid experiences, what do you think are the challenges and opportunities in the current cannabis industry and how do you deal with them?
There are massive opportunities for entrepreneurs. Equally, there are massive opportunities for hucksters who want you to buy their hemp infused vodka. I say buyer beware mostly. Through my six books, it’s possible to open many doors that were always closed to me. Equally, I’m well versed at being a bartender, from bar-back on up. I’ve cleaned all sorts of bathrooms (!, really) and I fully believe that challenges are nothing until you’ve cleaned up rubber floor mats after a wild night behind the stick. (the bar)
Tell us in brief about your book 'Cannabis Cocktails, Mocktails & Tonics'.
I wrote the first book that combines the finest strain specific cannabis flowers (NOT HEMP!) with the most intriguing craft spirits, in my own unique, cocktail whisperer manner, creating tasty little cocktails that confuse your bartender into believing they make good drinks! They’re fooling you! I teach you to decarb and infuse using the Ardent Lift and the Magical Butter Machine. Of course, no good cook relies on technology alone, so you are taught by decarbing and infusing using a double boiler. No gas stoves, please! Alcohol is very combustible!
Looking at the cannabis industry now and before, what are the major differences?
It’s mostly legal now. And with a Medical cannabis card, I’m less concerned about getting arrested in NJ.
Can you tell us about your favourite cannabis-infused cocktail?
The Mezzrole Cocktail. Loosely based on a Manhattan with THC infused vermouth and crushed ice with very special bourbon from Barrell- a micro-distillery/blender. Named for Mezz Mezzrow, who was Louis Armstrong’s weed dealer in the 20’s and 30’s. It’s got all the stuffing to get you stoned in five minutes or fewer!
Who has influenced you the most in this cannabis industry?
I’m lucky to say that there have been any bright lights in my galaxy. So that I don’t forget any one person, I’d say all whom I’ve met along the way have influenced me the most! But If I should really drill down, it was that bartender at the Pink Beach Club in Tucker’s Town Bermuda who sold me my first joint of ditch weed. He did it!
What are the trends you see coming in the cannabis industry in the next 5 years?
Infused alcohol and THC. That would give me a job, instead of lurking in the periphery!
