The Lowell Cafe - First Legal Cannabis Cafe in LA

The Lowell Cafe - the first legal cannabis cafe to open its doors on 1st October 2019.

The Lowell Cafe - a project of cannabis company Lowell Herb Co. - will be the first legal cannabis cafe in West Hollywood, Los Angeles. The cannabis cafe will open this year on the 1st of October.

Despite several scientific studies proving otherwise, Marijuana is still considered an illegal drug within several parts of the United States. According to data collected by the U.S. Department of Justice, more than one person is arrested for cannabis every minute. However, in spite of all this, there’s a cannabis company in California, ready to revolutionize the way people can publicly consume cannabis-based products.

According to the Lowell Herb Co. website, the Lowell Cafe will serve farm-fresh food, coffee, juice, and cannabis every day from 12 P.M. in the afternoon to 10 P.M. at night. “Sit on our patio, order a meal, have a conversation and experience cannabis together,” says a quote on their website.

The cafe’s kitchen will be helmed by Chef Andrea Drummer. Drummer - a 2010 graduate from California’s Le Cordon Bleu College - has previously worked at the Ritz Carlton and alongside popular chefs like Thomas Keller and Neal Fraser. Chef Drummer has previously made dishes infused with cannabis and is already a celebrity chef of sorts within the cannabis world. She’s known for making a cannabis-infused dish on Chelsea Handler’s show called Chelsea Does.

In an interview with The Guardian, chef Drummer expressed her views on this path-breaking cannabis cafe:

“To be able to engage in and consume in a space with like-minded people and not have it be secret and not feel judged, I think it’s an exceptional concept.”

With the aid of chef Drummer’s rich culinary experience, the cafe will not serve typical stoner food, but will instead serve food, which will accompany the cannabis strains that will be offered by the cafe. The Cali-inspired menu will consist of dishes that according to Drummer are, ”Meant to complement the heightened senses from THC consumption.”

Lowell Cafe guests will be able to choose from a variety of dishes such as grilled peaches, burrata, baby kale salad, crispy Brussel sprouts, and fried chicken sandwiches to name a few. Patrons will also be able to indulge in desserts like caramel popcorn, ice cream sandwich, bacon, s’mores, etc.

Cafe director Kevin Brady is already accepting bookings with people RSVP-ing from places as far as Japan and Russia. According to Brady, the cafe’s staff will act like wine sommeliers and help guide both cannabis veterans and newbies with their assortment of cannabis products. The director expects the cafe to attract a range of customers, including tourists, celebrities, and Hollywood screenwriters.

Sean Black, the co-founder of the Lowell Herb Co., hopes that the cafe will help fight the stigma around cannabis consumption. “We want it to have the same respect as fine wine … Cannabis can be a fun recreational part of society, like alcohol, without being dangerous,” says Black.

About the Lowell Cafe

In the spring of 1909, William “Bull” Lowell began growing what was called Indian Hemp on his farm on the central coast of California. Henry J. Finger took a dislike to Bull’s “marijuana being smoked by the wrong kinds of people”. Finger conspired to outlaw cannabis and later passed the 1913 Poison Act. Bull believed in a man’s right to smoke the dried plant and enjoy its benefits. When the stubborn Bull refused to stop growing his beloved plant, Finger shut down Bull’s farm and later threw him in jail.

Sustainability is also a large part of the Lowell Cafe. They follow their pledge to the T, making sure their way of working is both sustainable and efficient.
